Frequently Asked Questions
do you make custom pieces?
Absolutely! We do not make anything to sell on our website or in a storefront, it is all 100% custom to your space, budget, design aesthetic, etc.
how does your process work?
We will have an initial conversation to discuss your space and budget, as well as the desired form and function of the work. That will kickoff our concept design process where a rough estimate and layout are generated. After that we will draft a contract and, once signed by all parties, we move into detailed design where the dimensions will be finalized and the estimate firmed up. Once all details are signed off you will be placed in the shop queue until your project is up.
How long is your lead time?
Our queue varies seasonally but is typically 6-8 weeks out.
where do you make your pieces?
Everything we make is designed, fabricated, and finished in our shop. We are in Evanston, IL about 30 minutes north of Chicago.
what type of wood do you use?
That’s entirely up to the design, budget, and look you are after. Whether it’s cabinet-grade plywood, domestic or imported hardwood, or reclaimed lumber, we can work with any material.
Plywood? isn’t that what they use to board up buildings?
There are many types of plywood ranging from a $15 sheet of particle board to a $1000 sheet of exotic veneer. Plywood is a fantastic material to build cabinetry out of as it’s very dimensionally stable and flat, whereas even kiln-dried hardwood can move seasonally. It is available with a variety of core materials and many outer veneer options. We use domestic plywood where possible and it’s always cabinet-grade plywood. A far departure from what you’d find at a big-box retailer.
How should i care for my piece?
When in doubt, use a mild soap and soft cloth. Stay away from furniture polishes or waxes. Whether your piece has been painted, stained, or finished clear - it has a durable finish. But no finish is impenetrable and wood is a natural product. It’s a good practice to avoid letting moisture sit for a prolonged period, using coasters and wiping spills when possible.
